OBJECTIVE 16 - INCLUSION AND SOCIAL COHESION
Empower migrants and societies to realize full inclusion and social cohesion
Migrant inclusion and social cohesion are based on principles of protection of fundamental rights, respect, tolerance, and non-discrimination. Inclusion implies taking into account economic, psychological, social, linguistic, navigational, and civic spheres, as well as empowering host communities and other local actors to receive and engage with migrants.
Key areas of interest and activities related to objective 16 include:
- Orienting migrants on rights and obligations, basic language training, as well as social norms and customs in the country of destination
- Facilitating labour market inclusion and the participation of migrant workers in the formal economy. This can include eliminating gender-based discriminatory restrictions on formal employment to empower women migrants.
- Enabling social networks and relations between migrants and local members of their communities. These can be fostered through the organization of multicultural activities and facilitation of direct contact through sports, music, culinary festivals and any other recreational activity.
- Providing direct assistance and services for people who migrate as well as host communities
- Raising awareness and countering all forms of discrimination including xenophobia, racism, and intolerance
- Advancing policy development and research
Migrants and migration have an active role in contributing to sustainable development. Through integration, migrants can bring significant benefits in the form of skills, strengthening the labour force, investment and cultural diversity, and contributes to improving the lives of communities in their countries of origin through the transfer of skills and financial resources.
