The International Organization for Migration (IOM) is the leading intergovernmental organization promoting humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all people. It provides services and advice to governments and migrants. It is present in more than 100 countries and supports 175 member states in improving migration management.
IOM's work consists of ensuring the orderly and humane management of migration; promoting international cooperation on migration issues; helping to find practical solutions to migration problems; and providing humanitarian assistance to migrants in need, whether they are refugees, displaced persons or uprooted people. IOM's Constitution explicitly recognizes the link between migration and economic, social and cultural development, as well as respect for the right to freedom of movement of persons.
IOM works in four broad areas of migration management: migration and development, facilitated migration, migration regulation and forced migration. Concomitant activities include the promotion of international migration law, policy debate and guidance, protection of the rights of migrants, migration and health, and the gender dimension of migration.
The Organization operates in close collaboration with its governmental, intergovernmental and non-governmental partners.
