Fashion Steps Up: A Runway for Cultural Exchange
Dominica - Surprisingly, fashion emerges as a powerful tool for integration. It celebrates the richness of cultural diversity, fosters a sense of belonging, and enriches the nation's cultural tapestry. A local entrepreneur recognized this potential, creating "Dominica's Next Supermodel/Dominica's Next Male Model" (DNSM) to diversify the faces of fashion and modeling in Dominica. This year, the competition saw the inspiring participation of four aspiring models who hail from migrant backgrounds.
Peterson Marius: Arriving in 2019 from Haiti, Marius quickly adapted to Dominica's beauty, though the island's unique Creole dialect initially presented a challenge. A recent high school graduate, his passion for fashion led him to compete in DNSM. Despite challenges securing sponsors, the camaraderie with fellow models has been a source of joy.
Louvaincy Acceus: Following in his successful entrepreneur father's footsteps, Acceus joined him in Dominica at a young age. Initially facing language barriers, he embraced the island's peaceful environment, finding connection through sports and dance. Acceus entered the DNSM competition to honor his father's legacy and promote the family business, Kings Garment. His talent shone through, winning the "Best Rococopunk Fashion" and “Best Colour Block Fashion awards and placing first runner-up.
Yaimara Ana Hernandez Fuentes: Seeking an English-speaking experience and cultural immersion, Hernandez-Fuentes arrived from Cuba less than a year ago. Dominica's vibrant landscapes and friendly community quickly charmed her. Balancing two jobs with her extensive fashion and art background, Hernandez-Fuentes found the DNSM competition a perfect platform to display her talents.
Cobensky Filsaime: A unique blend of Cuban and Haitian heritage, Filsaime arrived in Dominica for high school. Though initial integration had hurdles, his determination and openness fostered a strong sense of belonging. Inspired by models and a family member, Filsaime's dream of modeling found encouragement from his friends. He participated in DNSM despite facing a last-minute sponsorship loss.
These inspiring stories exemplify the power of Dominica's integration efforts and the unexpected avenues, like fashion, that can bridge cultural divides and empower newcomers.
