Assessing migration governance to accelerate the SDGs through migration policy and practice
11 December 2023. - Through the Migration Governance Indicators (MGI) process, IOM worked with a broad range of stakeholders across the government sectors of Dominica, Grenada and Saint Lucia since 2022 to assess how policies and practices in each of these Member States provide for the human rights of migrants, and avail them of the essential services they require to unleash their potential to live productive and dignified lives, and contribute to the sustainable development of the countries that they originate in, live in, or traverse through.
IOM has worked with governments in Dominica, Grenada, and Saint Lucia to conduct national assessments, which took place through detailed interviews with technical officers across different sectors of government, including labour, education, health, community development, disaster management, social services, justice, and others. The results were returned to States for clarification, validation and prioritization, before completion so that the final assessment reports have been accepted by the participating governments as being accurate, and a useful tool for making progress on the SDGs.
The draft MGI Reports for Dominica and Saint Lucia have both been validated and are awaiting authorization to be published.
Plans are being made for final consultations with the Government of Grenada to validate their assessments, before moving to finalization.
Barbados has also indicated that they are interested in receiving IOM support to undertake an MGI assessment now that the new IOM Barbados Office has been established.
